Meet the Staff

Workshop Facilitators
Dr. Tim McKeny Dr. Timothy McKeny is the Director of the Better Mathematics Through Literacy program. He is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at Ohio University and teaches undergraduate and graduate mathematics methods courses in early childhood and middle childhood.
Dr. Susan Nolan Dr. Susan K. Nolan has over 30 years of teaching experience across multiple grade levels and has provided professional development workshops for area schools since 1999. Susan is also an instructor of reading courses in the Department of Teacher Education at Ohio University and is passionate about addressing the instructional needs of at-risk readers. 
Ms. Susan Payne is a National Board Certified teacher with over 35 years experience working with preschool and elementary children. Specializing in children's literature, she also works with pre service teachers at Ohio University.

Project Research & Support Team
Ms. Carolyn R. Ervin is the Program Coordinator for BMTL and also Projects Director for the Literacy Center.  Prior to joining the Literacy Center she served as director of Appalachia Reads, a literacy collaboration based out of the Ohio University Scripps College of Communication.
Dr. Barry Oches is the program evaluator for BMTL.  He has been doing program evaluation and educational research for eight years at Ohio University's Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs.  Before that he was a special education teacher, curriculum coordinator and elementary school principal in the Federal Hocking Local School district in Athens County.
Ms. Sharon Reynolds is the Interim Director of the Edward Stevens Center for the Study and Development of Literacy and Language (the Literacy Center). Sharon has worked with the Literacy Center for the past five years as trainer and curriculum developer and then as Coordinator of the Central/Southeast ABLE Resource Center. Her background is in Special Education and Curriculum and Instruction.
Dr. Linda J. Rice is the Dissemination of Research Developer for BMTL. Linda taught middle and high school English for ten years and is a National Board Certified Teacher in Adolescent-to-Young Adult English Language Arts. She has worked with pre-service teachers at Ohio University since 2000 and is currently the Associate Dean for Outreach and Undergraduate Studies in the College of Education.
Ms. Katherine Fergus is the Resource Specialist and Program Liaison for the Edward Stevens Center for the Study and Development of Literacy and Language (Literacy Center). Originally a student of Reformation and Renaissance History, Kate now runs the Resource Center Library, part of the Literacy Center, and maintains the Literacy Center website.
